Senator David Vitter (R-LA) got a big boost in his reelection bid when Family Research Council president Tony Perkins dropped his primary challenge.

Vitter, a hero amongst Christian conservatives, was seen as a formidable foe against Vitter, who is best known for his patronage of prostitutes in Washington and New Orleans.

But Perkins has decided to forgive, forget, and jump on the Satan Express with Vitter.

“I am grateful for those who’ve encouraged me to consider returning to elected office, but this is not the right time,” wrote Perkins in a letter to state party chairman Roger Villere. “Along those lines, I would like members of the State Central Committee to know that I support Senator David Vitter’s bid for reelection in 2010.”

Nice decision, Tony! We’re sure that Vitter has completely reformed and quit his whoring ways. Now, he just spends his days assaulting airline employees.

Vitter, of course, is not out of the woods yet. While his social conservative flank is now safe, he still needs to worry about the extreme-immorality vote. Under normal circumstances he would be completely safe with that demographic, but with porn star Stormy Daniels in the race he may be vulnerable.
